E_Workshop【Kusakizome and Aizome】

① Traditional dyeing in Japan “Kusakizome”
Trial class(Approximately 3 hours)

This is a one-time workshop where you can experience “Kusakizome”. “Kusakizome” is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that dyes cloth and yarn with dyes made from plants. All scarves on the photo on the left are dyed with onion skin.

This workshop will make you feel such charm of “Kusakizome”. You dye it with a silk scarf and a cotton small centerpiece cloth in this workshop. You can dye evenly silk scarf, and you can also dye handkerchief with Japanese traditional tie-dye.

You can dye different colors using “onion skin” or “coffee bean” which is one of familiar dye plants in this workshop. So you can enjoy dyeing in the kitchen at your home after attendance.

② Try Japanese traditional design with “Aizome”!

Class for dyeing T-shirt (2 times / total 6 hours )

“Aizome” is indigo dyeing. In Japan, we have got this blue of indigo from plants of polygonaceae. Since ancient times, “Aizome” has been the most popular kind of dyed clothing. So we developed various techniques such as stencil-dyeing (printing) and tie-dye in japan.

In this class you can dye original T-shirt by “Aizome”. If you are going to participate in this workshop, you need total 6 hours in 3 hours × 2times. First, you dye t-shirts with indigo. Next, you dye Japanese design to that shirt with the technique “discharge printing”.

By the way, “discharge printing” is a technique to dye patterns by erasing indigo.In this workshop you will do the technique of dyeing the pattern using the discharge glue from above the pattern paper.

You can express Japanese traditional designs by combining technique of “stencil-dyeing” and “tie-dye”. please enjoy practical and original Aizome T-shirt dyeing. I am looking forward to seeing you.

● The number of people who can attend at once is 1 to 4 people.
● Payment is only Japanese yen (cash).
● In the case of multiple participants, it will be the same content. We can not lecture simultaneously “Kusaki zome” and “Aizome”.
● We refuse visitors to enter. A fee is necessary to enter the workshop.
● In these workshops, we use boiling water etc. during work. As it is dangerous, children under the age of 12 are not admitted.
