Last winter, we installed a clock-shaped wood stove in one corner of the workshop. That experience led directly to this project: building a dyeing kamado for a 100-liter pot.
When we bought it, I thought it would be enough simply to warm the cold workshop. But once we lit it, we found it useful for almost everything—not only heating the room, but also boiling water and supporting our dyeing and weaving work. After just one season, I had grown very fond of it.
The same fire can warm the room, boil water, and be used for dyeing. I came to appreciate how valuable a wood stove is when the heat needed for our work can be used without waste.

時計型薪ストーブは、作業場の暖房としてはもちろん、やかんで湯を沸かしたり、鍋をかけたりできるので、染織作業でも大いに役立ちました。

The clock-shaped wood stove had only worked for us for one season. Even so, we decided to remove it for the time being so that we could rebuild this area into a proper fire station for full-scale dyeing work.
それは、大きな布を染めるための大鍋と、その大鍋を安定して使える染色用の竈です。
時計型薪ストーブには、まだ1シーズンしか働いてもらっていません。それでも、この場所を本格的な染色作業に使える火場へ作り替えるため、いったん取り外すことにしました。

100リットルの大鍋で大きな布を染めたい
So this time, I finally made up my mind and prepared a 100-liter pot.
And we decided to build an extra-large kamado inside the workshop to use it! 😲
ひとつ屋では、これまでも“へっついさん（かまど）”を使い、染料を煮出したり、布を染めたり、糸や生地を炊いたりしてきました。薪の火を染織作業に使うことは、ひとつ屋にとって特別なことではなく、日々の仕事の一部です。
そこで今回、意を決して用意したのが、100リットルの大鍋です。
そして、この大鍋を使うための超大型竈を、作業場のなかに作ることにしました！😲

100リットルの水は、それだけで約100キログラムになります。そこへ大鍋そのものの重さが加わり、その下では火を燃やします。
これまで、工房や納屋では、自分たちでできることはなるべく自分たちの手で作ってきました。しかし、今回ばかりは、素人づくりで済ませるには規模が大きすぎます。

材料が揃い、早速、作業開始！
Dyeing requires a great deal of water and heat. That is why we believe it matters not only what we burn, but also how fully we can put a single fire to work without wasting its heat.

100リットルの大鍋とサステナブルな染色へ
染色には、たくさんの水と熱が必要です。だからこそ、何を燃やすかだけではなく、ひとつの火をどこまで無駄なく仕事に生かせるかも大切だと考えています。
暖を取り、湯を沸かし、染料を煮出し、布を染める。ひとつの火をいくつもの仕事へつなぎ、丈夫な竈を長く使い続けることも、ひとつ屋にできるサステナブルな染色の形です。
今度の竈が完成すれば、これまで鍋の大きさでためらっていた、大きな布の染色にも取り組めるようになります。
