Grapevine-Scroll Window Grille|A Stencil Design in Iron

In an earlier post, Something I Want to Try (Japanese page), I wrote that I wanted to use designs created for dyeing stencils in new forms of making at Hitotsuya(ひとつ屋).

This time, I decided to use laser-cut ironwork to transform a dyeing-stencil design into a metal window grille.

I later introduced the planned design in A Decorative Window Grille (Japanese page).

The design is based on a grapevine-scroll motif composed of flowing vines, leaves and bunches of grapes. The motif is also introduced on the Nara National Museum’s official Grapevine Scrolls page.

This is an iron grille designed for a window—in other words, a decorative fence fitted outside the window.

The next step is to give the iron a blackened finish. I will report again when the window grille is complete.
