Welcoming the Wood Stove I Had Long Wanted — Part 1

I finally bought the wood stove I had been thinking about for a long time: a clock-type wood stove. It is not a heavy cast-iron stove with an antique look, the kind you might imagine in a living room. What I chose this time was a very practical, no-frills clock-type wood stove.

This clock-type wood stove looks very simple, but it is a well-made little masterpiece for the price. My purpose is not to relax while watching the flames, but to make work in the barn a little more comfortable. For fuel, I plan to use scrap wood from our DIY and making projects, as well as miscellaneous wood from the satoyama landscape around us.

I also bought the chimney parts, so the preparations for installation were ready.

First, I set the wood stove in its designated place.

The chimney will rise up through the second floor of the barn, which I recently renovated.

The plan is to send it straight through the roof and out into the open air. But this step — cutting through the roof — turned out to be quite a challenge. First, from the inside of the slate roof, I marked a circle slightly larger than the diameter of the chimney.

Next, I drilled holes along the marked line.

After that, I carefully widened the opening little by little with a hammer.

▼ Opening the slate carefully so it would not crack. At last, I could see the sky!

It took time, but at last the chimney connected the wood stove to the roof in one continuous line.

Next, I will waterproof the hole in the roof. After that, it will finally be time to light the first fire. I must admit, I feel a little nervous about that first moment. I will share that part on the blog as well, so please look forward to it.
