Pomegranate Peel 100g ◆ Natural Plant Dye for Botanical Dyeing

Pomegranate peel 100g is a natural plant dye for botanical dyeing.

Pomegranate is a deciduous small tree in the family Lythraceae. It is widely grown as an ornamental garden tree, and its fruit is also eaten.

Its peel and root bark have long been used as herbal materials. In botanical dyeing, the dried peel of the fruit is used as the main dye material.

The resulting color varies with the fiber and dyeing method. Alum mordant produces yellow, copper mordant gives beige to brown, and iron mordant creates deep gray to black.

We hope you will enjoy the broad range of colors that can be obtained from the same pomegranate peel simply by changing the mordant.

How to Dye with Pomegranate Peel

  1. Add the pomegranate peel to boiling water and simmer over very low heat for about 40 minutes to make the dye bath.
  2. Strain out the peel through cloth or a sieve. Place the fabric or yarn in the dye bath and heat gently for about 40 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent uneven dyeing. Keep the used dye bath.
  3. Rinse the dyed fabric or yarn lightly in lukewarm water, then soak it in the chosen mordant bath for about 40 minutes to develop and fix the color.
  4. Rinse again in lukewarm water and return the material to the reserved dye bath.
  5. When the desired color depth is reached, remove the material, rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water, and dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated place.

◆ About Hitotsuya Plant Dyes

The plant dyes offered by Hitotsuya(ひとつ屋) include materials traditionally sold as herbal medicines, as well as plants grown at our Hitotsuya Dye Farm, where we cultivate plants used for dyeing and weaving.

We grow our own plants with as little pesticide and chemical fertilizer as possible. Although we take great care, small insects may occasionally be mixed in. This does not affect their quality as dye materials, and we appreciate your understanding.

We hope these materials will support your safe and natural creative work.
