Myrobalan 100g is a natural plant dye for botanical dyeing.
Myrobalan comes from a deciduous tree in the family Combretaceae, native from the Indian subcontinent through western China and Indochina.
The tannin-rich dried fruit is simmered to prepare the dye bath. Depending on the fiber and mordant, it can produce yellow, khaki, and soft grayish tones.
The fruit has a long history in Asia. In Japan, it is associated with the material called kariroku recorded in the Shosoin document Shuju Yakucho.
With an aluminium mordant, myrobalan produces yellow. With an iron mordant, it produces calm khaki tones. When indigo is layered over unmordanted myrobalan, it can create a pale celadon-like green.

Color Characteristics of Myrobalan Dyeing
- Aluminium mordant produces a bright, gentle yellow.
- Iron mordant produces a calm grayish khaki.
- Layering indigo over unmordanted myrobalan can produce a pale celadon-like green.
※Results vary with the fiber, dye concentration, mordant, number of dyeing cycles, and depth of indigo. Test a small sample before the final dyeing.
