Kihada (Amur Cork Tree Bark) 100g ◆ Natural Plant Dye Material

Kihada plant dye, 100g, is a natural dye material made from dried Amur cork tree bark.

Kihada is a deciduous tree belonging to the citrus family and the genus Phellodendron. In Japanese, its name may be written with the characters 「黄蘗」「黄柏」 or 「黄膚」. It grows naturally in mountainous areas of northeastern Asia and can also be found throughout Japan.

The tree can reach a height of 10–20 metres. Its dried bark has long been used both as a traditional medicinal material and as a dye. As a plant dye, it produces a vivid yellow known in Japan as “kihada-iro”.

Besides producing its characteristic yellow, kihada can also be used as an underdye for red and green. It is particularly well known as an underdye that helps safflower produce a brighter, more vivid red.

Other plant dyes

Hitotsuya introduces a variety of plant dyes for botanical dyeing in addition to kihada.

◆ About Hitotsuya’s plant dyes

The plant dyes handled by Hitotsuya include materials originally sold for use in traditional medicine, as well as plants cultivated at our own “Hitotsuya Dye Plant Farm”, where we grow plants used for dyeing and weaving.

We grow these plants with as little pesticide and chemical fertiliser as possible. Although we inspect them carefully, small insects may occasionally be present. This does not affect their quality as dye materials, so we kindly ask for your understanding.

Please make use of them in your safe and natural creative work!
