Marigold (whole plant except roots) 50g is a natural plant dye for botanical dyeing.
About 50 species of marigold grow across tropical and temperate regions. The name is said to come from “Mary’s gold,” as the flowers were blooming on a feast day of the Virgin Mary.
Garden varieties include names such as “French” and “African,” but all of them originated in Mexico and are unrelated to France or the African continent. Marigolds reached Japan around the Kan’ei era (1624–1644).
They are generally grown as ornamental flowers, but their roots can help suppress nematodes. For this reason, marigolds are also planted alongside other crops as companion plants.
At the dye farm of Hitotsuya（ひとつ屋）, we plant them throughout the fields for this purpose.
Seeds sown in spring grow into large plants by summer. Before the height of summer, we prune them to improve airflow. The flowers, leaves, and stems harvested at that time become an excellent dye material.
As the color sample shows, marigold dyes a wide range of fibers well, including cotton. It is one of the plant dyes especially recommended by Hitotsuya.
