“Gaia” is the name of the goddess of the Earth in Greek mythology. Her name came to represent the Earth itself and later inspired the Gaia hypothesis—the idea that living organisms and the non-living environment interact to form a self-regulating system.
Once again, this may sound a little complicated, but don’t you think it is a wonderful idea!? To imagine that everything on this planet is connected and forms part of one living system⋯.
In a recent blog post, “The Principles of Botanical Dyeing”, I wrote that botanical dyeing depends not only on plants, but also on water and minerals. All of these are gifts from the Earth.
Even when the same plant is used, the resulting color changes according to the season and the place where it was gathered. The nature of the water and subtle differences in minerals can also alter the color. For this reason, reproducing exactly the same shade is never easy.
Perhaps we should say that the color depends on “the mood of the goddess.” It truly is a “color given by the goddess.” Don’t you think there is something beautiful about that!?
