A few days ago, in a post titled “There Is Something I Want to Try”, I wrote about drawing plans for a chair like this.
I have now built the chair. First, here are the front and back views.
▼ Here are some of the details. The surface of the iron has been finished to give it an antique appearance.
The chair is made entirely of iron and wood. The antique-style finish on the iron gives it a very appealing character.
I designed the openwork in much the same way that I design stencils for dyeing. At first glance, the chair may look rather delicate, but it does not move at all—even when I sit on it.
And yet!! The only tool needed to assemble it is a single screwdriver!! It can be assembled easily, even by someone who is not accustomed to making furniture.
I considered the design and structure by combining what my family’s ironworking shop could do with what I could do myself. It was incredibly enjoyable to see those ideas take shape as an actual object.
