Hitotsuya is developing Sojuhaku, a new material made from mulberry bark that is neither clearly paper nor cloth, with the idea of turning it into a bag using persimmon tannin and handmade-paper techniques.
Hitotsuya’s sericulture began with a mulberry field in 2021. After many difficulties, the silkworms are finally beginning to spin their cocoons.
Silkworm droppings, called sansha, are used to dye iron-mordanted wool before the fibre is cooled, dried, carded and spun into a deep-coloured yarn.
