ひとつ屋には、ネパールから来たスタッフのビジャ君がいます。透き通るような大きな目が印象的な好青年です。でも、彼と出合う前の私にとってのネパールといえば“ヒマラヤ！”くらいしかありませんでした。ところが、彼といろいろと話しているうちに、そのイメージは変わりました。
特に大きく変化したのが「ヒンズー教」について――。正直のところ、それまでは、どこかおどろおどろしい印象があったヒンズー教なのですが、よくよく話していると、仏教の考え方にも近く、とても穏やかな教えのようです。私の実家は真言宗なのですが、その影響を受けた宗派らしく、よく似た仏（神）が存在しています。
今回の写真は、そんなヒンズー教徒が結婚式などで体に描く「メヘンディ」の模様のなかから蛸（たこ）のデザインを日本の伝統的な染色用型紙に起こし、糊置きしたものです。まだ何に仕立てるかは未定ですが、まずは柿渋か藍で染めてみようと思っています。ネパール（ヒンズー）と日本の伝統文化のコラボレーションです！ 何ができるか、楽しみにしていてください！
ちなみに、「メヘンディ」はヒンズー語で「ヘナで肌を染める」や「ヘナで肌に模様を描く」ということを意味しているそうです。

Mr. Bija, a staff member from Nepal, is working with us in our workshop. He is a nice young man with beautiful, clear eyes. However, before I met him, all I could think of when I thought of Nepal was the Himalayas. However, as I talked with him about various things, that image changed.
Particularly significant changes have occurred with regard to Hinduism. To be honest, up until then, Hinduism had given me the impression that it was somewhat scary, but after talking with it often, I realized that his teachings are very gentle and similar to those of Buddhism. I am a Buddhist, and because I am influenced by it, there are Buddhas (gods) that are very similar to me.
These photos are an octopus design created from the “Mehendi” pattern that Hindus draw on their bodies at weddings and other occasions, using traditional Japanese dyeing patterns. I haven’t decided what to make it with yet, but I’m thinking of dyeing it with persimmon juice or indigo first. A collaboration between Nepal (Hindu) and Japanese traditional culture! Please look forward to seeing what we can do!
By the way, “Mehendi” is a Hindi word that means “dying the skin with henna” or “drawing patterns on the skin with henna.”

順便說一句，“Mehendi”是一個印地語單詞，意思是“用指甲花給皮膚染色”或“用指甲花在皮膚上繪製圖案”。
